Bennett family reaps rewards at Julia Creek Dirt to Dust Festival
THE Bennett kids are seasoned competitors when it comes triathlons.
The six kids share their parents' love of competing and took part in their third Julia Creek Dirt to Dust Festival at the weekend.
Parents Lance and Jennifer each placed third in their respective divisions and three of the six kids won their junior triathlon races.
"Their hard work is starting to pay off,” Mr Bennett said.
"They self-manage their training, we don't push them too hard at that age.”
The kids' training schedule includes swimming a couple of times a week in Emerald Seals Swimming Club, riding to school each morning plus extra cycling on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as playing touch football.
"They are pretty active at the best of times,” Mr Bennett said.
"We do a lot of travelling to get to events; the whole family participates.”
Coming in eight minutes behind the winner in his race, Mr Bennett faced tough wind, plus he was competing in the elite division for the first time.
"For a shorter sprint race, it's the toughest I've done,” he said.
"I'm in the elite group this year and for me that is a definitely step up into a tougher group but you get prizemoney so that attracts committed athletes.”
The next triathlon for the family is the Elders Real Estate 2017 Emerald Triathlon on April 22 at the Fairbairn Dam.
Registrations are now open for the sprint, enticer, team and kids' triathlons.
