Bringing a small country town together
THERE'S nothing like a small country town to be bring people together.
Capella Arts Council is teaming up with Capella Theatre Tragics to bring Locals at the Local to the Capella stage.
The show stemmed from an idea by the Capella Arts Council secretary Colette Andersen and revolves around publican Sherry Longbottom and her twin daughters Saline Swallows and Sandy Picholl.
"As a fundraiser for them I would write a play, and with the help of Capella Theatre Tragic actors, those still keen, create a project that not only involved local actors interacting with my characters, but include local locations and local identities,” Colette explained.
"The production is called Locals at the Local and it is a one woman show on the night, but in order to give me time to change costume, I have incorporated filmed scenes which further tell the story and that's where you see the local actors and identities interacting with my characters at local places around Capella.”
The idea was a long time in coming, starting back when Colette and her family lived in Capella until last year and during her time there she started drama classes called Act Out.
"I co-started the little theatre group called Capella Theatre Tragics which ran for four very successful years and then I left,” she said.
"No-one wanted to take it on and I had also done a lot of MC work in Capella and Tieri and over that time my performances ranged between a stand up style performance to developing comedic characters to entertain people with.
"I created these characters largely because in small communities where the same people turn up all the time, I was starting to wonder if they were getting sick of seeing me and that's why I thought I'd mix it up a bit.
"For the last two years I've been thinking that I have enough characters to create a story around so I put an idea to the Capella Arts Council.”
The show is on one night only at the Capella Cultural Centre on November 5. The bar opens at 6pm with the show from 7pm for mature audiences. Tickets ate $30 which includes dinner and drinks, to book call 4984 9300.
