Countdown to Emerald’s big race day

EMERALD Jockey Club president Leon Roberts and his hard working committee are gearing up for a big day of racing action on April 30, when the Emerald Jockey Club hosts the 2016 running of the Emerald Cup.

The cup, which will be run over 1615 metres is worth $12,000 in prize money.

The $10,000 Emerald Newmarket will also be held over 1200 metres with the six card program worth $57,000 of prize money on offer for the day off racing.

Leading trainers Tom Button, Craig Smith and Glenda Bell will all have a strong presence with all three being represented with runners on the day in the Emerald Cup.

Craig Smith is set to line up with one of his stable stars Barcelona Bound who is a last start winner of the Goondiwindi Picnic Cup.

Barcelona Bound is a winner on the Pioneer Park track and looks a big threat in this year's Emerald Cup.

Astute young Rockhampton trainer and premiership leader Tom Button has indicated he will be starting last seasons Rockhampton horse of the year Smart Patrol who is raced by Springsure tyre king Ian Rohden.

Smart Patrol hasn't been far way in his last two starts since coming back.

The punters will be well catered for with a strong ring of bookmakers for all the southern and local races and the course Tab outlet will also be available.

A well stocked bar will be in operation and the canteen will be serving up all the usual goodies.

A highly competitive fashions of the field competition will also be run with great prizes on offer.

Be sure to save the date for next weekend's big cup day races.
