Happy couples prone to pack on excess pounds
YOU vowed to love each other for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. But no one said anything about piling on the kilos together.
Research has found that couples in happy marriages were likely to put on weight as the comfort of a stable relationship led many to abandon diets and fitness regimes.
The trend was revealed through a poll of 1000 people, where many couples said they had put on more than six kilos within four years of their wedding day.
The study, carried out by UK diet firm Forza Supplements, found 82% of couples had put on weight after settling down, with more than half saying they had packed on the pounds together.
The weight gain was attributed to the amount of time they had spent staying in and snacking together in front of the television.
Settled couples also felt under less pressure to look good because they were no longer seeking a partner.
Childbirth was another factor - with women in particular blaming it for their weight gain.
But Woodend mother of four Kim Small said she had not let married life go straight to her hips.
In fact, she and her husband of 16 years, David, said they were now fitter than the day they were married.
She said married couples just needed to make a conscious decision to be healthy.
"For me, it's about wanting to feel good about myself," Mrs Small said.
"I put on weight when I had my kids, but I was determined not to get stuck with it.
"As a family, we try and stay active, whether it's going on a bike ride, or swimming at the beach or training for a fun run together."
The Smalls even take part in arduous obstacle course-racing events like the annual Stampede challenge.
Mr Small said he and his wife had embraced a healthy lifestyle so they could set a good example for their kids.
"We've always tried to eat well ... finding time to exercise when the kids were infants was a challenge though," he said.
"But now they are older, it's not as difficult as they can join in the fitness activities too."All couples have to do is make a little time for exercise each day, it's amazing how easy it is."
