Majestic mullet faces the chop

DAVE Hopkin once joked that he wouldn't say goodbye to his 26-year-old mullet for anything less than $10,000.

This March, his light-hearted remark could become a reality.

Mr Hopkin has signed up for the World's Greatest Shave and intends to lose his much-loved - although greying - mullet as well as his beard to raise $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Mr Hopkin, a graphic designer at the QT, said the World's Greatest Shave was a great opportunity to raise money for the charity and would provide a fitting farewell to his decades-old hairstyle, which could well be the oldest mullet in Ipswich.

"I turn 60 next year, so I think it's time I lost the mullet," Mr Hopkin said.

"My daughter suggested I sign up for the Greatest Shave and lose it that way, so hopefully I can raise a fair bit of money. Even $5000 would be good, but $10,000 would be amazing. We set the aim a bit high, but we'll push it at our workplaces and in the community and just see how it goes.

"My daughter Kylie will colour her hair on the day, and my niece Sarah will shave her hair too if we raise $5000 as a team."

Mr Hopkin said his new short haircut would probably surprise his 25-year-old daughter.

"Kylie has never seen me without a mullet, so it'll be a bit of a shock," Mr Hopkin said.

"I've only cut it off once, and that was after I finished high school. It didn't last that long."

But Mr Hopkin vowed that after this year's World's Greatest Shave his mullet would be gone forever.

"The mullet will go for good and I'll lose the beard too, but I'll keep my moustache," he explained.

In the meantime, Mr Hopkin is savouring the last few weeks with his silver mullet before the day of the big shave on March 16.
