Having 10 girlfriends helps keep Mel Gibson fit
LIKE his namesake movie star, Mel Gibson the rooster has a way with the opposite sex - and living with 10 gorgeous girlfriends could be why he was crowned Australia's fittest chook.
Booral couple Matthew and Susan Smith own the three-year-old Araucana rooster and were surprised to win the national competition held by Sustenhance.
"We entered Mel Gibson because we think he is special," Mrs Smith said. "We got him two years ago and he is the most placid, non-aggressive chook and is popular with the 10 hens."
As well as being popular with the ladies, Mel Gibson can also ride a pony.
"When the pony comes to the pen to look for food, Mel Gibson jumps on him and stays there," Mrs Smith said.
The family love animals and besides the chickens, they also own a pony, a guinea pig, a dog, an Indian running duck and a 60cm earthworm.
"Our chooks are healthy and we feed them with Sustenhance, food scraps and often give them supplements so they don't fall sick."
Sustenhance general manager Adam Williams said judging was tough, given the high calibre of entries, but the panel managed to agree on a clear winner without ruffling too many feathers.
"Our winner is 'Mel Gibson', a beautiful chook who has a talent for riding Shetland ponies. It was very difficult to go past a name like that, or a skill. This is a chicken with a spirit of adventure," he said.
