SINCE going live online with his free designated driver service, Kyle Wilkie has shot to local stardom as the "chillaxed" bloke offering no-strings-attached lifts to those who would otherwise be stumbling home or forking out money for a cab.

Mr Wilkie said his ClubHoppers' phone didn't stop ringing on Saturday night as his first night driving strangers to and from Toowoomba's CBD went off without a hitch.

"I drove, all up, about 30 people on Saturday. I loved it. I met interesting people - one of them a professional wrestler from Brisbane. No-one was violent or rude and they were all so appreciative," he said.

Mr Wilkie had already done his own research regarding the legality of his service, but had this confirmed last week by relevant government departments.

"I contacted the Department of Fair Trading and the Department of Transport and it's fine because if it's less than seven people offering the service it doesn't have to be registered as a not-for-profit," Mr Wilkie said.

"There are no requirements to have special insurance. If there's an accident, it's treated the same way as if it was my friends in the car."

Mr Wilkie said many people had wanted to give him donations or take him out for a cup of coffee, but, legally, he could not accept any kind of payment.

He said the service would run on a first-in, first-served basis.

"I'm definitely going to keep doing it."

A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson confirmed they had spoken to the operator of the ClubHoppers service about operating the free service.

"We encourage people using free services of this nature to consider safety aspects of their journey.

"This includes whether the drivers undergo safety checks and hold necessary authorisations; and whether the passenger vehicles are regularly inspected and fitted with safety equipment and are appropriately licensed."

Would you use the ClubHopper service?

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

  • Steven Pigeon Hartfiel: This guy is the most chillaxed bloke ever thanks for the ride mate!
  • Joanne Torrens: This is a great idea but surely you can have a donation tin in your car! I understand it's a "free service", but I'm sure people would love to donate.
  • Marilyn Watson: Or maybe he is just a nice guy who wants to help save lives. Don't be too quick to judge just be cautious and travel in numbers.
  • Kylie Groper Inglis: Good on him! Taxis are far too expensive and unreliable at early hours of the morning! This will be a great alternative for anyone contemplating drinking and driving.
