Officers flee for lives in Cape York street riot
TEN extra police have been flown into the remote Cape York community of Pormpuraaw after two officers had to flee for their lives in a street riot last night.
Cape York Inspector Paul James said officers had fired a Taser shortly after they were called to a large alcohol-related street disturbance in the isolated indigenous township about 11.30pm.
Inspector James said the officers went to the aid of a person who had been knocked to the ground and appeared to have head injuries.
But the heavily bleeding victim allegedly pulled out a knife and threw it at one officer.
"They've gone in to help but the person with head injuries has produced the knife and thrown it,'' he said.
"It hit one officer in the leg, it did not injure him, and the police have discharged a Taser.''
