Organic poultry farm approved, set to crack new market

A PROPOSAL to build a 200,000-bird organic egg farm in Felton has been approved by the Toowoomba Regional Council.

McLean Farms, working under the name Alpair Pty Ltd, first submitted its proposed poultry farm to the council in March, which included 17 laying sheds and four rearing sheds on a 100-hectare property along Pittsworth-Felton Rd.

PSA Consulting Australia's Nicole Boulton said the developers hoped to capitalise on increase in demands for free-range and organic eggs in the Australian market.

"Research undertaken by the Australian Egg Corporation Limited (AECL) indicates that the production of eggs in Australia has increased by 10% over five years from 2011 to 2015," she wrote.

"Due to changes by the nation's largest egg retailers (Coles and Wooworths), free range egg production is expected to increase, with new sheds and new farms requiring to be built to ensure customer demand can be met."

The egg farm is also expected to create about 25 jobs.

McLean Farms was approached for comment.
