Panthers start season on high

THE Middlemount Panthers started the season with a bang when they defeated the Emerald Cowboys 78 -12.

The Panthers new halves Mitch Wyatte, two tries, and Joel Duffy, three tries, led the team from one side of the field to the other and also cut inroads in the Cowboys' defence.

Ryan Hansell was on fire from the start, and playing centre he had room to move which he did, scoring two tries.

The Panthers' two front rowers Joe Toatof and Brendon Hoskins led from the front, letting the backs have the ball out wide.

There were a lot of long-range tries for the Panthers.

Young winger Mike Dyson was named the Panthers' Player of the Match, scoring five tries off good line running and being on the end of the back line.

The team was relentless and pushed the Cowboys all the way.

The Cowboys tried hard and to their credit kept trying all game to score points which came in the second half with tries to Logan Tipene and Alex Cutts.

Corey Butler tried hard all game showing glimpses of good play.

He will get better as he plays more games.

Front Rower Phil Bullivant was Man of the Match for the Cowboys and hit the ball up all game, making valuable yards.

Andrew Doyle worked hard around the ruck directing play but they were outgunned by a better team.

The Cowboys will learn from this game and I can see that the Panthers will be a force this year.

Two old heads for the Panthers are still having good games, Steven Henderson and Jason Randell as well as Les Healey from the Cowboys.

I can see a good year for the league if other teams can match the Panthers.

The match of round two this weekend will be the Middlemount Panthers against the Dysart Bulls.

Both teams had good wins on the weekend and Middlemount looks the deal but the Bulls were all over the Tigers last Saturday.

The Bulls could also be set for a big year and with coach Phil Derkson still there.

The Crushers versus the Bluff Rabbitohs game will be a fiery one for the two neighbouring towns.

It is always a good game.

Both teams are coming off a loss and will be looking for their first win.

Can the Cowboys defeat the Springsure Mountain Men at home on a Friday night?

It was a good win by the Mountain Men last weekend and they may continue their winning form.

The Cowboys have front-rower Mick Batts for the game and he should help with leadership up front.

The Tigers Ladies will confront the Clermont Ladies on Sunday as the only ladies game.

The Emerald Cowgirls will play the Crushettes in a friendly in Blackwater when Blackwater host their big day out of Rugby League.

Enjoy your football.
