Where workers can earn up to $537 an hour under EA

GLADSTONE Ports Corporation employees are earning up to $537 an hour under a union bargained workplace agreement.

This equates to more than $243 per hour for the lowest paid production employees and more than $537 per hour for the top paid administration employees on "special public holidays", according to the Gladstone Ports Corporation Enterprise Agreement 2016 GPCEA.

The Gladstone Ports Corporation is listed as a government-owned corporation by Queensland Treasury.

Under the Financial Accountability Act of 2009, as a government-owned corporation, the objective of the GPC is to provide a 100 per cent dividend via efficient practices to its shareholders, who are the people of Queensland.

A GPC spokeswoman said "as the gateway for Australian trade, jobs and prosperity, Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) employs approximately 750 employees to perform a variety of management, operational, trade, technical and administrative duties across our three ports of Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg."

"We pride ourselves and are renowned for being an outstanding local employer in the Central Queensland region, offering competitive remuneration, flexible working arrangements and a range of professional development and health and wellbeing initiatives," the spokeswoman said.

"With respect, and under privacy obligations, GPC cannot disclose confidential employment or remuneration details."

The publicly available, 129 page GPCEA 2016 was signed off by Fair Work Commission deputy president John Kovacic to operate from December 4, 2017.

The application for the GPCEA was backed by "the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union AMWU, Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union CFMEU, and The Australian Workers' Union," the GPCEA states.

Gladstone MP Glenn Butcher has publicly declared he is a member of the AMWU as previously reported in The Observer.

Mandatory union membership is written into the GPCEA.

"The parties (GPC, AMWU, CFMEU and AWU) undertake to facilitate all employees covered by this Agreement to become and remain financial members of the Union/s signatory to this

Agreement," the GPCEA states.

Under the enterprise agreement wages are classified under production, maintenance and administration categories.

These classifications do not include executive positions such as general managers, superintendents or the CEO.

Under this union bargained agreement, an employee who works on a "special" public holiday (Good Friday, Anzac Day, Labour Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day) is paid eight times their usual rate for overtime, and four times their rate for normal hours.

The minimum "base" wage for an employee classified as a production worker from November 1, 2019, is $63,295.35, and the maximum "base" rate is $81,379.22.

Maintenance staff receive a minimum "base" rate of $72,643.31 and a maximum of $94,436.33.

Administration staff receive the most renumeration, with a minimum "base" rate of $66,172.30 and a maximum of $139,856.20.

The GPCEA also states GPC employees have received a 3 per cent payrise from November 1 every year since 2016.

Former Gladstone Ports Corporation CEO Peter O'Sullivan, Neil Henderson of the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Service Union, Stephen Baker of the Australian Workers Union, and Brian Devlin of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union all signed off on the GPCEA between September 8 and 13, 2017.
