Stolen car found set on fire

FLAMES alerted passing motorists to a car fire at Richmond on Saturday night.

The car has been reported stolen on Thursday, July 13, Sergeant Andy Buteaux, of Mackay police, said.

Emergency services crews rushed to Holts Rd at Richmond about 8pm Saturday and found the stolen car alight near tramlines.

One crew attended and had the blaze out within 15 minutes, a spokesperson for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said.

Rural View resident Kelly Sizmur was travelling home when she saw the car on fire.

"We thought it could have been a start of a cane fire but as we got closer and drove past it was a car completely on fire," she said.

"The car in front of us had called for emergency services.

"We were a little (shocked) but our first thought was for whoever the owner was, as we assumed that it must have been stolen," she said.

Investigations into the theft of the vehicle and the subsequent blaze were being conducted by Forensic Units and the Mackay CIB, Sgt Buteaux said.
