Student returns to her old school as excited new teacher

AMY Privileggio held her primary school in such high regard she studied education at university and took up her first teaching post at her old stomping ground, Chelona State School.

Miss Privileggio left the small country school in 2005, completed Years 8 to 12 at Mackay North State High School, studied for four years at CQUniversity Mackay, and returned to Chelona school in 2015 as the Year Prep/1 teacher.

"The amazing thing is I was working alongside Mr Tony Moore who was my Years 4, 6 and 7 teacher," she said.

"The thing I love most about the school would be the small, community feel."

Miss Privileggio will be among the past students who will gather at the school grounds next Sunday, June 11 to share memories of their time at Chelona State School.

The school will celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2018 and the stories, photographs and memorabilia gathered next Sunday will be compiled into a 125-year commemorative book.

"The Deguara family has had several generations go through Chelona and one of the staff members here, Jenny Leeding, has been here for 41 years," Miss Privileggio said.

"It's these people, and anyone who has been involved with the school over the past 25 years, that we are asking to come along to the afternoon tea next Sunday."

Chelona State School is 15km south of Mackay and was established in January 1893.

The school marked its centenary in 1993 with celebrations and a 100-year commemorative book.

The new 125-year book is due for release during anniversary celebrations on June 30 and July 1 next year.

All past students, teachers, staff and school affiliates are invited to attend the afternoon tea at the school next Sunday, June 11, from 2pm.

Those attending are encouraged to bring photographs, videos, past school uniforms and any other relevant memorabilia. RSVP via 4959 5216.

Those former students and staff members who are unable to attend but would like to contribute to the 125-year book can complete a questionnaire by emailing Michelle Bath at mbath15@eq.edu.au or by phoning the school office.
