Three-door Volkswagen Golf GTI returns this week
THE cheapest Golf GTI in a decade, and perhaps of all time, hits the road this week.
It's the GTI Original, with three doors, tartan trim and bodywork in red or white. The price is $37,490 as a manual, with dual-clutch auto adding $2500.
The five-door version starts from $41,990 for the manual, while the Performance Edition 1 has a sticker price of $47,990 plus on-roads.
For those chasing the most raucous ability, there's the R editions which have price-tags of $47,490 plus on roads, topping out at the R Wolfsburg Wagon at $59,990.
"Volkswagen offers not only the most accomplished fast and fun compact cars in the world, it provides the world's widest range,” Volkswagen Group Australia Managing Director Michael Bartsch said.
"There is now a performance Golf for everyone. Extraordinary claims are being made for supposed rivals that are not yet on sale. While any skunkworks can turn out a track day special, the expertise and experience required to engineer a GTI or an R - cars that also excel in the real world - is rather more hard won.
"When you've owned a GTI or an R, it's difficult to settle for anything less.”
