Will our Aquaman find his mermaid?

ADAM Sellars can see the irony in travelling to Sydney and fronting up to the bright lights of a reality dating show only to meet a local lady.

The Point Cartwright-based freediving instructor is one of two Coast men vying for the attention of Alex Headland native and former Gogglebox star Angie Kent in the new season of The Bachelorette.

"It was a long way to go to meet someone who's local," he told the Daily.

"It was my sister who gave me a bit of a push.

"I haven't been very good at picking (women to date) for myself, so I thought why not?"

The 34-year-old admits he doesn't watch much TV and had no idea who Angie was when they locked eyes on the red carpet.

"I didn't really watch the shows she's been on, so I was going in blind," he said.

"I really didn't know in the beginning what I was getting myself into. I just want on for the fun of it and to dive in, so to speak."

His freediving skills, which include meditation and breathing to slow his heart rate, came in handy.

In Wednesday's premiere episode, viewers will see Angie's suitors react to the news that her brother Brad has been operating undercover amongst them at the cocktail party.

"It's definitely nerve-racking with the set and all the cameras there, so I used all the skills in my tool box to keep myself calm," Adam said.

"It's my first experience with reality TV and TV really full-stop, aside from the local news. I want to know how I'll handle that and obviously try to be myself."

The father of two admits his kids have very different opinions about him going on the show.

"My daughter - she's 7 - she's quite excited but my son, who's turning 10 soon, is very much on the other side of the fence. He's like 'Not cool Dad'," he said.

He plans to tell Angie, 29, about his two children as soon as possible.

"My strategy is to come straight out with it because I want her to make an informed decision around me," he said.

Also hoping to catch Angie's eye is Noosa Councillor Jess Glasgow, who said he's looking for a partner who has a sense of humour.

"She (Angie) is funny and does not take herself too seriously," he said. "She looks like she enjoys life. Plus, she is stunning."

Cr Glasgow, 36, admits he's "major clucky" and ready to settle down.

"(I'm looking for) my team mate, someone who can be a friend and lover," he said.

The Bachelorette premieres Wednesday, October 9 at 7.30pm on Ten/WIN.
